Pit and Fissure Sealants
Pit and fissure sealants are simply fluoride bondings that are applied to the deep grooves and fissures of a young tooth. This material helps to decrease and cariogenic activity (decay), in these tough to brush areas. I typically place these restorations on kids, but occasionally I will place them in adult teeth. Sealants are a wonderful deterent to tooth decay in little ones and they have revolutionized pedodontic dentistry in regards to decreasing tooth decay. At our Dayonta Beach Shores dental office, we usually place sealants starting at about age 6, when the permanent first molars start to erupt.
